The number of people switching to a vegan diet increases, and it is not surprising to know that many individuals quit. Failing to achieve what they want is a contributing factor. But I would like to emphasize that everyone can avoid these mistakes as long as you do your homework. Remember, you cannot succeed in something without hard work. Transitioning to a vegan diet is the same thing. With diligence, patience, and commitment, all your diet or fitness goals are feasible in no time.
Here are the other reasons people fail on a vegan diet:
Lack of Knowledge
It is a big mistake to switch to a vegan diet because it is a fad. Remember, it is not a fun game. The lack of knowledge could result in nutrient deficiencies, which you do not like to experience. While there is nothing wrong with changing the way you eat, it is essential to educate yourself to guarantee a better result. Do some research on how many calories you need to eat or combinations of food to help you get all vitamins your body needs. It is also all right to attend relevant webinars to help you avoid any guessing game.
It is impossible to go vegan overnight. Every person has different health needs and requirements. In my case, it took me a few months before eating full vegan, and there is nothing wrong with that.
I tell you what, transitioning quickly to a vegan diet won’t do you any good. It can cause a shock to your body that is hard to deal with. Expect intense detox symptoms that will challenge your willpower to succeed. The trick here is to take your time. Taking any shortcuts does not have any place here.
Lack of Supplement
Not every nutrient is available in any plant foods. Vitamin B12, for instance, is hard to get from vegan recipes. But that’s all right, and taking supplements come to your rescue. If you suffer from extreme fatigue or megaloblastic anemia, it is time to incorporate a vitamin B12 supplement into your diet. Another nutrient that you cannot find in plants is creatine. Although the liver produces creatine, studies confirmed that vegetarians have a lower amount of creatine. Taking creatine-rich supplements is worth it. Vegans also tend to be deficient in carnosine, vitamin D3, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), heme iron, and taurine.
Not Eating Enough
This is common among my close friends. If you are in the same situation, there is nothing wrong with eating more. Studies revealed that plant foods are less calorically dense than any animal product (meat and poultry). Therefore, if you feel hungry, I’d suggest you eat more as long as your meal is healthy. Vary every meal you eat to satisfy your cravings and taste buds. If you have researched vegan-friendly recipes, nothing can beat the services of a licensed and certified nutritionist.
Only Eating Gourmet Vegan Food
Another reason people stop eating vegan is that they say it is costly. It is true, especially when you only go out and pay for gourmet vegan food. But if you can afford it, eating gourmet vegan food will not be a problem. Alternatively, you can watch out for superfoods, including hemp seeds, acai smoothie packets, or spirulina powder. But it is not compulsory. If you are on a budget, you can stock up your fridge with fresh and organic produce, like potatoes and bananas. They are not only expensive but also nutrient-packed.
Thinking that Vegan is Not Right for Your Body
Most people experience some detox symptoms when they turn to a vegan diet. Usually, signs include weight gain, acne, headaches, and bloating. So, prepare yourself.
In my experience, these symptoms will not last forever. If you stay consistent, committed, and patient with your health goal, you can surpass this challenge. Surround yourself with positive people to inspire you to go on no matter what. Also, think if other people can, you can do it, of course. A proper and positive mindset will help you throughout the process.
